Maharashtra Congress protests across state, seeks Gyanesh Kumar's removal over SIR
Maharashtra Congress staged protests outside district collectorates statewide, demanding the removal of Gyanesh Kumar over the SIR exercise.
The Maharashtra Congress on Monday held demonstrations outside district collectorates across the state, pressing for the removal of Gyanesh Kumar in connection with the ongoing row over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
According to the party's state unit, protests were organised outside collectorate offices in several major cities, including Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Kolhapur, Solapur, Thane, Amravati and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
The coordinated demonstrations reflect the party's continuing campaign against the voters' roll revision exercise, which has drawn objections from opposition parties in Maharashtra and elsewhere.
Congress workers gathered at the collectorate premises to register their demand, with the state unit stating that the protests were held simultaneously in different parts of Maharashtra.
The party has been demanding Kumar's removal over his role in the SIR process, which it alleges has caused inconvenience to voters. The exercise has emerged as a flashpoint between the ruling dispensation and the opposition.
Monday's protests mark the latest in a series of demonstrations by the Congress in Maharashtra over the issue, with the party seeking to build pressure through district-level mobilisation.
