Maharashtra to Issue First Drought Mitigation Notification in Three Days

Maharashtra will issue its first notification on drought mitigation within three days, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Tuesday after chairing a Cabinet meeting in Mumbai. He said the state government would simultaneously prepare a proposal seeking financial assistance from the Centre.

"Just declaring drought is not enough. We need to ensure that measures related to drought mitigation are implemented. The first notification will be issued in three days," Mr. Fadnavis told reporters.

Large parts of Maharashtra, particularly the Marathwada and Vidarbha regions, are experiencing drought-like conditions following a weak monsoon. The Opposition has pressed the government to declare drought without delay and roll out relief measures.

Mr. Fadnavis said the state would not hold back relief for farmers awaiting central funds. Assistance to farmers has already begun, and a separate proposal for central help will be drawn up in line with National Disaster Response Fund rules.

He noted that central assistance during droughts or periods of excessive rainfall often arrives late because a laid-down process must be completed. That process, he said, stems from a law passed by Parliament and carries prescribed timelines. The state would fulfil all legal requirements and send its proposal, but would not wait on that assistance to act, he added.

Ministers and MLAs will visit affected areas to assess conditions and meet farmers, who will be able to raise grievances and share their views. "We will seek a package from the Centre and financial assistance. We will separately start preparing a proposal," Mr. Fadnavis said.
