Maharashtra FDA suspends Box8 outlet licence in Mumbai amid food safety drive

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA), under the leadership of Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, has intensified its enforcement drive against food outlets in the state. In the latest action, the regulator suspended the licence of a Mumbai outlet operated by EatClub Brands, the parent company of popular quick-service chains Box8 and Mojo Pizza.

The suspension follows an inspection that revealed multiple violations of food safety norms. Officials cited poor hygiene standards, inadequate storage practices, and the absence of protective gear for staff handling food as key reasons for the action.

In a separate but related move, the FDA also revoked the licence of Rani Diets, another food service operator. The cancellation came after inspectors found evidence of rodent activity and generally unsanitary conditions at the premises.

The actions are part of a broader crackdown by the state regulator aimed at enforcing compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act. The FDA has been conducting surprise checks across Mumbai and other cities, targeting both established chains and smaller eateries.

While the regulator has not issued a public statement detailing the duration of the suspension, the affected outlets will need to address the flagged deficiencies and undergo fresh inspection before their licences can be reinstated. The crackdown underscores the state's focus on public health and food safety compliance in the hospitality sector.
