Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi Takes Oath as Bombay High Court Chief Justice

Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi was formally sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The oath of office was administered by Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma during a ceremony held at Lok Bhavan in Mumbai.

The event was attended by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, and several state cabinet ministers. State Chief Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal read out the notification and the Warrant of Appointment issued by the President of India.

The ceremony featured renditions of the National Song and the National Anthem by the police band, with the proceedings beginning and concluding with these musical pieces.

Justice Tripathi succeeds Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, who was elevated to the Supreme Court. In the interim, Justice Ravindra Ghuge had been holding additional charge of the High Court.

A law graduate from Lucknow University (1990), Justice Tripathi began his practice as a civil advocate in January 1992. He served as Additional Chief Standing Counsel for Uttar Pradesh from October 2007 before his appointment as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court in September 2013. He was made a Permanent Judge in April 2015.

Justice Tripathi is scheduled to retire on June 20, 2028.
