Mamata Says INDIA Bloc Meeting Likely in Delhi on September 30 Amid SIR Row
Mamata Banerjee said an INDIA bloc meeting is likely to be held at Delhi's Constitution Club on September 30 to discuss ECI-related issues and the Opposition's next steps.
Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Saturday that an INDIA bloc meeting is likely to be convened in Delhi on September 30, as Opposition parties seek a coordinated response to the ongoing controversy over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the functioning of the Election Commission.
Speaking at a rally in Serampore in Hooghly district, the All India Trinamool Congress chief said she had reached out to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with a message that Opposition parties must come together. She indicated that the meeting would most likely take place at the Constitution Club in the national capital.
Sources said Banerjee also spoke with Rahul Gandhi over the phone and pressed him to convene an INDIA bloc meeting at the earliest. She is also said to have held a conversation with CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby.
The proposed gathering comes amid continuing protests by Opposition parties against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the SIR exercise. The discussions are expected to centre on the Opposition's next course of action against the poll panel and the revision drive.
Congress has been holding demonstrations across the country demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, adding to the pressure on the poll body as the row over the electoral roll revision continues.
