Mangione in Court Ahead of Murder Trial for UnitedHealthcare CEO's Killing

Luigi Mangione, the 28-year-old accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan last December, is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. The hearing comes ahead of his murder trial, which is set to begin next month.

Mangione has entered a not guilty plea to state charges of murder, weapons possession, and forgery, brought by the Manhattan District Attorney's office. He has also pleaded not guilty to separate federal stalking charges. The case has drawn intense public interest, with the killing sparking widespread debate about frustrations with the American health insurance industry.

During Tuesday's session before Justice Gregory Carro, the court is expected to address practical matters such as jury selection and how to manage public access to the highly anticipated proceedings.

Prosecutors have indicated they possess substantial evidence, including hundreds of hours of surveillance footage, fingerprints, DNA, a cellphone, a firearm with matching ballistics, and a notebook allegedly containing writings that express hatred toward insurers and an intent to kill.

Mangione's defense team has offered little insight into their strategy. However, a court filing from July suggests they may argue that he was not in control of his actions due to a severe mental health crisis. They have not conceded that he was the shooter.

Thompson was killed in the early morning outside a hotel where an investor conference was being held. The graphic nature of the shooting and the subsequent five-day manhunt, which ended with Mangione's arrest in Pennsylvania, turned the case into a media sensation. A separate federal trial for Mangione is scheduled to begin in January.
