Anonymous Jury Set for Mangione Murder Trial in CEO Killing

The judge presiding over Luigi Mangione's murder trial has ruled that the jury will be anonymous, a decision announced during a Tuesday court hearing in Manhattan. Justice Gregory Carro did not provide a public explanation for the measure, though anonymous juries are typically used in high-profile cases to shield members from potential harassment or intimidation.
Mangione, 28, faces charges for the December 2024 shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel. The killing drew widespread condemnation from officials while also resonating with public frustration over health insurance practices. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to state charges of murder, weapons possession, and forgery, as well as to separate federal stalking charges.
Jury selection in the state trial is scheduled to begin on September 8. At the same hearing, Justice Carro also ordered that an overflow courtroom be made available for press and public viewing should the main courtroom reach capacity.
Prosecutors have indicated they intend to present extensive evidence, including surveillance footage, fingerprints, DNA, a cellphone, a gun with matching ballistics, and a notebook in which Mangione allegedly expressed hatred for insurers and intent to kill. Defense lawyers have offered little detail on their strategy, though a July filing hinted at a possible argument involving an extreme mental health breakdown. They have not conceded that Mangione was the shooter.
Thompson was fatally shot in the early morning outside a hotel hosting an investor conference. The killing, captured on video, sparked a five-day manhunt that ended with Mangione's arrest in Pennsylvania. His federal trial is scheduled to begin in January.
