Manisha Koirala to Headline Indie Feature 'Cowgirls & Indians'
Manisha Koirala will star in indie film 'Cowgirls & Indians', directed by Tejal Desai, shooting in Texas from November.
Actor Manisha Koirala is set to lead the upcoming independent feature 'Cowgirls & Indians', directed and written by Tejal Desai. The film, previously announced under the title 'Cowboys & Indians', will begin production in November around Austin, Texas, and nearby locations. Kirtana Banskota is producing the project.
The story follows a middle-aged Indian woman navigating identity and forming unlikely friendships against a Texas backdrop. It explores themes of cultural displacement and resilience as South Asian heritage intersects with American grit.
Commenting on the project, Koirala noted that opportunities for women of a certain age are gradually improving, though there remains progress to be made. She said the script and Desai's vision convinced her of the story's potential to cross boundaries. She added that she looks forward to the experience of riding horseback in Texas while enjoying her chai.
Desai described the film as a coming-of-age story about a middle-aged Indian woman discovering herself in the American Southwest. He praised Koirala's career, citing her performances from 'Dil Se' to 'Heeramandi' as examples of her ability to convey intense realism, vulnerability, and strength. He noted that the character Asha requires an actress whose history is visible in her eyes and who can carry a story with quiet power. Desai also highlighted Koirala's personal resilience as mirroring the arc her character travels in the film.
