Mara Sisters Speak in Unison in Herzog's Venice Premiere 'Bucking Fastard' (2026-09-03)

Real-life sisters Kate and Rooney Mara take on the unusual challenge of playing characters who speak in perfect unison in Werner Herzog's new film, "Bucking Fastard," which held its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

The 83-year-old director revealed that the idea for the film originated decades ago after he met a pair of twins who spoke together. That concept remained dormant until someone suggested casting actual sisters instead of twins, which immediately brought the project to life. Herzog wrote the screenplay in just five days.

"It's an invented story, which I had long time in me," Herzog said at the festival. "I based it on an idea of having two twin sisters speaking in unison, having the same dream, and also digging a tunnel for love."

Kate Mara described accepting the role as a "no-brainer," calling it a unique opportunity to work with the director of her dreams while playing "the same person but different." The Maras portray fictional sisters Jean and Joan Holbrooke, who embark on a literal and spiritual journey together.

Co-star Orlando Bloom, who plays the object of both sisters' affections, praised the Maras' commitment to their synchronized performance. "It was amazing to see them turn up on set," he said, noting how they seemed to breathe, dream, and finish each other's thoughts together.

The actors also shared their admiration for Herzog's working style. Domhnall Gleeson called him a "rebel" and "completely fearless," while Herzog himself insisted he is the most organized person on any set, finishing films under schedule and budget.

"Bucking Fastard" is competing for the festival's Golden Lion award and does not yet have a U.S. release date.
