Massachusetts Primary: Markey vs Moulton Tests Progressive-Moderate Divide

Massachusetts voters head to the polls Tuesday for a state primary that will offer fresh insight into the ongoing ideological and generational battles within the Democratic Party. The marquee contest is the U.S. Senate race, where 80-year-old incumbent Ed Markey faces a competitive challenge from 47-year-old U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton.

Markey, who has served in Congress for decades, is seeking a third full term in the Senate. He previously defeated a Kennedy in a 2020 primary. This time, however, the progressive wing has largely consolidated behind him, with endorsements from Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Moulton, a six-term congressman and former presidential candidate, has picked up support from The Boston Globe and several House colleagues.

The race is a key test of whether progressive incumbents can hold off more moderate, younger challengers. Moulton's path to victory likely depends on replicating the coalition that nearly upset Markey in 2020, particularly in central and southeastern Massachusetts. Essex County, which includes Moulton's hometown of Salem, is seen as a crucial battleground.

Beyond the Senate race, voters will also decide primaries for governor, U.S. House seats, and local offices. In the 6th Congressional District, a six-way Democratic primary is underway to replace Moulton, with Dan Koh leading in fundraising. In the 8th District, 13-term incumbent Stephen Lynch faces a well-funded challenge from attorney Patrick Roath.

Polls close at 8 p.m. ET. As of Thursday, roughly 468,000 ballots had already been cast. Massachusetts does not have automatic recounts, but candidates can request one if the margin is within 0.5% of the total vote.
