The rumours had circulated amid unverified reports concerning South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Chinese President Xi Jinping, both of whom participated in the summit.

In its response, the ministry rejected the claims outright, characterising them as fabricated content designed to mislead. The statement did not offer further details on the origin of the posts or the specific platforms on which they spread.

The BRICS Summit brought together leaders from member nations in India, drawing international attention to the grouping's agenda. The unfounded illness claims emerged in that context, prompting the ministry to issue a public clarification.
