Kennedy Jr. has acknowledged one measles-related death but is disputing a second case that the Pennsylvania Department of Health has confirmed.
Kennedy stated on social media that he is relying on information from the Lancaster County Coroner, who determined that measles caused only one infant's death. The coroner reportedly also noted that the infant had a condition called Amish lethal microcephaly. Kennedy suggested that the second death, also reported in Lancaster County, was not caused by the virus.
This position contradicts the Pennsylvania Department of Health, which reiterated that it has confirmed two measles-related deaths in the state this year. A department spokesperson declined to provide further details or comment on the Health Secretary's remarks.
The dispute has led to questions about the national data. Kennedy indicated that the federal government's health statistics agency has not yet received and reviewed all records, and current national data does not reflect any measles deaths in 2026. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has added a note to its website stating it is re-evaluating how it classifies measles deaths to promote consistent reporting across jurisdictions.
Public health experts have criticized the move as an extraordinary level of political interference in state health authority, arguing it minimizes the risks of the highly infectious virus. This comes as the U.S. experiences its most significant measles outbreak in over three decades. Kennedy, a long-time vaccine skeptic, has faced criticism from medical organizations who say his statements and policies have increased vaccine hesitancy, making it harder to control such outbreaks.
