Meerut Lawyers Bar BJP Entry to Courts Over High Court Bench Demand
Lawyers in Meerut will bar BJP representatives from court premises and abstain from representing party MPs and MLAs, as 22 districts in Western Uttar Pradesh halt judicial work.
Lawyers in Meerut have decided to bar Bharatiya Janata Party representatives from entering court premises, escalating their campaign for a separate high court bench in Western Uttar Pradesh.
The move by the Meerut Bar Association came after a delegation of lawyers met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to press the demand. The lawyers said they had expected the chief minister to act on their request, but returned without any concrete assurance.
According to the lawyers, the chief minister told the delegation that the matter of a high court bench falls within the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court.
Following the meeting, the association resolved to prohibit the entry of BJP representatives into the courts. Banners carrying the message "No Bench, No Vote" and announcing the bar on BJP representatives were put up at the court gates.
The lawyers also decided they would not represent BJP MPs and MLAs in court proceedings.
The protest widened as lawyers across 22 districts of Western Uttar Pradesh abstained from judicial work, underscoring the depth of the demand for a bench in the region.
