Drunk Driving Suspect Held After Mercedes Drags Motorist 2 Km in South Goa
A drunk driving suspect was arrested after his Mercedes allegedly hit a two-wheeler in South Goa, killing one man and injuring another.
A 37-year-old man was killed and another injured on Friday after a Mercedes car allegedly rammed their two-wheeler in South Goa's Sancoale area. Police have arrested the car's driver on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The collision occurred around 2 pm. The Mercedes reportedly dragged the two-wheeler and its rider for at least two kilometres before the car caught fire and came to a halt near a local church.
The deceased has been identified as Ashok Chavan, who was riding the two-wheeler. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared brought dead. The pillion rider, Sonu Kumar, is undergoing treatment for his injuries.
An eyewitness, Jose Fernandes, said he and another passerby pulled the car's driver out of the vehicle after it stopped and caught fire. Fernandes noted that without their help, the driver could have suffered fatal burn injuries.
The driver, identified as Vidhyadhar Prabhu, was arrested on Friday night. He was produced before a local court and remanded to police custody for two days. Police said he was allegedly drunk at the time of the incident.
An FIR has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, for rash driving, culpable homicide, and acts endangering the life or personal safety of others.
