Meta unveils Muse, its first autonomous AI agent for personal tasks
Meta has launched Muse, an autonomous personal AI agent that operates in a secure virtual environment and can independently execute tasks like bookings and form-filling.
Meta has entered the autonomous AI race with the launch of Muse, its first personal AI agent designed to work independently on behalf of users. CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the tool as one that "works 24/7 to get things done for you," positioning it as a hands-off assistant for everyday digital chores.
Muse operates inside a dedicated virtual machine, called the Muse Secure VM, which isolates the agent and user data from the broader system. A separate security layer, referred to as a Sentinel agent, monitors all outgoing actions and data. This layer is programmed to request user permission before any sensitive operation, such as a purchase or sending an email, proceeds.
The platform is accessible through a standalone app or via WhatsApp. Under the hood, it is powered by Muse Spark, which Meta calls its most capable model for agentic workflows. The company claims the system requires no technical expertise, making it usable "out of the box" for a global audience.
Once a user shares a goal, Muse is designed to build a personalized plan and execute the steps autonomously. This includes opening browsers, filling out forms, negotiating transactions, and tracking price changes. Users can disconnect access to any app or service at any time and can review complete activity logs. Meta has also confirmed that private data and session transcripts will not be shared with its advertising units.
For financial transactions, the agent integrates with Link, a service built by Stripe, using single-use payment cards to protect account details. Buyer protections are included for losses, returns, and price drops. Meta plans to release an encrypted version, the Muse Confidential VM, later this year, where users will hold the cryptographic keys.
The rollout begins in the United States on iOS, Android, and web platforms, with smart glasses integration planned for the future. Meta is offering the service free for up to 100 million tokens per week, with paid subscription plans available for heavier usage.
