Mumbai: MG Windsor Crash Kills Woman, Injures Six at Malad Junction
An electric MG Windsor rammed into vehicles at a Mumbai signal, killing a woman and injuring six others.
A 34-year-old woman was killed and six others injured when an electric MG Windsor car ploughed into a motorcycle and three auto-rickshaws at a traffic signal in Mumbai's Malad (West) area on the night of August 30.
CCTV footage of the incident shows vehicles waiting at a red light on SV Road when the speeding car, driven by 70-year-old Krishna Shantaram Chamankar, crashed into them. The impact threw people into the air. The woman, identified as Priyanka Mayank Satra, was riding pillion with her husband, who suffered serious fractures and spinal injuries and was hospitalised.
The injured also included three auto-rickshaw drivers – Subhedar Chandra Gautam, Ramkesh Rajbhar and Abdul Rehman Shaikh – and a passenger, 48-year-old Zaitun Bi Imam, who sustained severe head injuries and was taken to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital.
Chamankar, a real estate developer and partner at KS Chamankar Enterprises, is in police custody. He told investigators he mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. A blood-alcohol test came back negative.
Police have registered a case of rash driving and death by negligence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Following the crash, local traders, lawyers and relatives of victims gathered outside Malad Police Station, alleging that Chamankar was receiving preferential treatment – including access to his personal phone and an air-conditioned room. Chamankar had previously faced scrutiny in the Maharashtra Sadan money laundering scam.
