Ceiling collapse at Warangal MGM Hospital injures seven, junior doctors seek safety audit
A ceiling collapse at MGM Hospital Warangal's Arogyasri ward injured seven people, prompting T-JUDA to demand a structural safety audit and faster completion of the new super-specialty hospital.
A portion of the ceiling in the Arogyasri ward of MGM Hospital in Warangal caved in on Sunday, leaving three patients, two attendants and two sanitation workers injured. The Telangana Junior Doctors' Association (T-JUDA) confirmed the casualties and flagged the incident as evidence of the hospital's deteriorating infrastructure.
In a statement, the association said several existing buildings on the campus have become structurally unsafe and now pose a risk not only to patients and their attendants but also to doctors, nursing staff, sanitation workers and other personnel working on the premises.
T-JUDA has called for an immediate and comprehensive inspection of all hospital buildings to identify vulnerable structures and carry out the repairs and safety measures needed to prevent a repeat of Sunday's collapse.
The association also renewed its demand for the early opening of the upcoming super-specialty hospital. It argued that the continued reliance on the present buildings has overburdened the ageing infrastructure and added to the difficulties faced by patients and healthcare staff alike.
Urging the government to speed up the remaining work on the new facility, T-JUDA said the super-specialty hospital would offer safer and improved medical care while also providing better working conditions for doctors and other healthcare workers. The association has separately sought immediate safety measures at the existing MGM Hospital to avert similar incidents in the future.
