Crane topples onto vehicle in Miami's Brickell, injuring five
A crane collapsed at a Miami construction site Monday morning, crushing and igniting a passing vehicle and injuring the driver and four workers, officials said.
An 85-foot (26-metre) crane collapsed onto a passing vehicle at a construction site in Miami's Brickell neighbourhood on Monday morning, setting the car on fire and injuring five people, officials said.
The accident took place shortly after 8 a.m. at the upscale construction site, where the crane — described as a piling rig — came down across the roadway.
Miami Fire Chief Robert Hevia said two workers had been trapped in the collapse, while the crane operator managed to jump clear as the structure tipped over. Both trapped workers, the operator and the woman driving the car all suffered minor injuries.
The three construction workers were taken to a nearby trauma centre, while the driver was transported to a different hospital. Officials have not released the identities of those hurt.
The cause of the collapse has not been determined, and Hevia said an investigation is under way. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Miami-Dade County Unsafe Structures personnel responded to the scene.
Firefighters remained at the site to contain a fuel spill and stop it from spreading further until a specialised mitigation crew arrived.
