Michigan Cyclosporiasis Cases Climb 11% in a Week, Near 14,000

Michigan health authorities reported 13,909 cases of cyclosporiasis on Thursday, marking an 11% increase from the previous week. The state continues to account for the majority of infections in a multi-state outbreak of the parasitic illness.

Despite the weekly jump, officials indicated that new case reports and related emergency department visits are trending downward. They have advised residents that routine guidance for consuming lettuce and salad greens can be resumed, following earlier signs that the outbreak was slowing.

Michigan remains the hardest-hit state, having reported two deaths linked to the outbreak last week. Both individuals had significant underlying health conditions, according to officials.

Wayne County leads with 1,794 cases, followed by Oakland County with 1,344. The 30–39 age group accounts for the largest share of infections at 2,615 cases. A total of 314 infected individuals have been hospitalized.

Nationally, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 13,895 cyclosporiasis cases across 47 states as of August 11.

While shoppers have been cleared to buy lettuce again, the outbreak has dented consumer confidence in fresh produce beyond recalled items, affecting sales at restaurants and supermarkets. Acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas urged Americans to remain confident in produce safety, citing newly finalized agency guidance on preparation and packaging aimed at reducing foodborne illness risks.
