Milei revs up campaign to bring Formula 1 back to Argentina
President Javier Milei says he will lobby the FIA to bring Formula 1 back to Argentina for the first time since 1998.
Argentine President Javier Milei has thrown his weight behind a campaign to return Formula 1 racing to the country for the first time in nearly three decades.
In a radio interview on Sunday, Milei said he would personally advocate for the sport's comeback, and announced plans to attend the International Automobile Federation's (FIA) Americas Congress in Buenos Aires from August 31 to September 2. The event, hosted by the Automovil Club Argentino, marks the nation's return to hosting the international motorsport gathering after an absence of almost 30 years.
"We are going to work to have Formula 1 back in Argentina again," Milei said, adding that he would also hold a separate meeting with FIA representatives.
Argentina last hosted a Formula 1 race in 1998. Since the start of the year, the Oscar and Juan Galvez Autodrome in Buenos Aires has been undergoing renovations to achieve Grade 1 circuit status, a certification required to host such events.
The venue has already secured a MotoGP race for 2027. Work is now being accelerated to obtain the FIA's Grade 1 licence, raising hopes that a Formula 1 round could be added to the calendar in the coming seasons.
