Minneapolis Apartment Shooting Leaves Three Dead, Five Injured

Investigators in Minneapolis are combing through an apartment building in the city's downtown area following a shooting on Wednesday evening that left three people dead, including the suspected gunman, and five others wounded.

Law enforcement personnel, including a mobile crime scene unit from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, remained at the scene on Thursday. Police received a 911 call about shots fired shortly after 4:30 p.m. and officers were inside the building within two minutes, according to Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson.

Officers discovered victims quickly but then heard more gunfire coming from a higher floor. Peterson said that when they reached the area, a haze significantly limited their visibility. He did not elaborate on the cause of the haze.

Among the wounded were three police officers. Two were shot—one in the leg and another twice in the abdomen—while a third suffered other injuries. All three were hospitalized and are expected to make full recoveries, Peterson said.

Authorities have not released details about the suspected shooter but stated they were familiar with the individual prior to the incident. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and another died after being transported to a hospital. The circumstances of the suspect's death have not yet been clarified.

Residents described a chaotic scene. Julius Bailey, who lives in the building, said he was outside when he heard gunshots and saw a fellow resident holding a pistol. He recounted hearing a woman scream and counting eight shots as he fled. Bailey described the man as someone known in the building for belligerent behavior and for displaying his weapon.

Another resident, Chris Miller, said he heard a rapid succession of shots and ran outside. He told reporters he believed he knew the shooter and had reported an encounter with someone carrying a handgun in the hallway to building management earlier in the week.
