Minneapolis Police Hailed as Heroes After Apartment Shooting Response

Minneapolis officials have publicly commended police officers for their response to a deadly shooting in an apartment building, an incident that left two people dead and six others injured.

Mayor Jacob Frey detailed the officers' rapid response, noting they arrived at the scene approximately two minutes and 26 seconds after the initial call. They entered a building where an active shooting was taking place, navigating a dangerous environment filled with haze from an exploded fire extinguisher.

"The level of heroism that took place yesterday is practically unrivaled," Mayor Frey said, highlighting that officers evacuated victims to safety for medical treatment while under fire.

Police Chief Bill Peterson echoed this sentiment, expressing pride in the officers who "heroically placed themselves between a violent shooter and those he intended to harm." He stated their bravery is undeniable and that the department owes them a debt of gratitude.

The suspect, identified as Carlton Johnson, was killed by police at the scene. The five wounded include two officers shot by gunfire and a third who sustained other injuries. All three officers were hospitalized but are expected to make a full recovery.

Chief Peterson revealed that Johnson had a history of minor infractions like driving violations and parking citations. He noted that a recent incident from June 25th, where Johnson displayed a handgun, was investigated and submitted to the Hennepin County Attorney's office for charging consideration. Court documents indicate Johnson was facing eviction and had previously threatened a fellow resident with a gun.
