Remains of Last Missing Climber Found After Broad Peak Avalanche
American climber Mallory Geis's remains were found Friday, the last of 10 mountaineers killed in a July 31 avalanche on Broad Peak.
Search teams in northern Pakistan have recovered the remains of American climber Mallory Geis, the final missing member of a 10-person international expedition that was struck by an avalanche on Broad Peak last month.
Irfan Arshad Khan, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, confirmed that a team of local volunteers located Geis's body on Friday. The recovery brings closure to a search that began on July 31, when the group was swept away while attempting the 26,247-foot peak.
The expedition was led by Nirmal Purja, the Nepal-born former British Army soldier known as Nims Dai. Purja gained international fame in 2019 for climbing all 14 of the world's highest mountains in a record 189 days, a feat documented in the Netflix film "14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible." His record was later broken in 2023.
For Geis, the climb marked a first attempt at an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan. The region's high-altitude climbs carry significant risk, with avalanches, falling ice and rock, and sudden weather shifts contributing to frequent accidents on expeditions in the area.
