MoD signs Rs 586 crore deal for indigenous tank power units
The Defence Ministry has awarded a Rs 586 crore contract to Accurate Industrial Controls for Auxiliary Power Units for T-72 and T-90 tanks.
The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth Rs 586 crore with Accurate Industrial Controls Private Limited for the supply of Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) for the Indian Army's T-72 and T-90 tanks. The agreement was signed in New Delhi on September 21, 2026, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
An APU serves as an alternative source of electric power for a tank's fire control system, firing circuit, gun stabilisation system and other ancillary equipment. The units being procured are indigenously developed, a factor the ministry links to improved operational readiness, reliability and sustainability of the Army's mechanised formations.
The contract is being viewed as a step in the indigenisation of critical sub-systems for armoured platforms. It also demonstrates industry-led research and development under the Make-II category, a route that allows the private sector to propose and develop solutions for defence requirements. The ministry described the deal as evidence that the mechanism can translate indigenous innovation into production and induction.
The procurement is aligned with the government's Viksit Bharat @2047 vision and is being projected as a milestone in the push for Aatmanirbharta in defence, aimed at building a self-reliant and globally competitive Indian defence industry.
