Modi Urges BRICS to Reshape Global Order for Global South
PM Modi called for transforming the global 'pyramid of privilege' into a 'platform of partnership' at the BRICS opening session.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday made a strong pitch for a larger role for developing countries in global decision-making, telling the opening session of the BRICS summit that the Global South must move from being a "rule-taker" to a "rule-shaper".
Describing the summit as "coming of age", Modi said the present global architecture resembles a pyramid, in which decisions are taken by those at the top while those at the bottom bear the consequences without power or leverage. That "pyramid of privilege", he said, should be transformed into a "platform of partnership".
The Prime Minister said BRICS has come into its own identity and is advancing through consensus. Amid portrayals of the grouping as an anti-Western bloc, he stated that it is "not against anyone".
Modi also cautioned that the grouping should not lose institutional momentum despite its rotational chairship. To sustain continuity, he proposed a troika mechanism to follow up on initiatives and projects, supported by a digital repository tracking implementation, status and timelines.
Earlier in the day, before receiving leaders of BRICS member countries, Modi held separate meetings with the leaders of Ethiopia, Malaysia and the UAE.
