Modi Chairs BRICS Session on Inclusive Global Governance in New Delhi
PM Narendra Modi chaired a BRICS session on inclusive global governance during the 18th Summit in New Delhi, where leaders adopted the New Delhi Declaration.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a BRICS session titled "Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism" on September 12, 2026, held during the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
In his opening remarks, the Prime Minister said the Global South finds itself in the front row of global crises while remaining in the back row of decision-making. He called for transforming what he described as a "pyramid of privilege" into a "platform of partnership".
He stressed that global governance must reflect present-day realities, with greater representation, particularly in institutions such as the UN Security Council. He also urged efforts to help the Global South move from being a rule-taker to a rule-shaper, suggesting that BRICS could equip young diplomats and policymakers from the Global South with negotiation skills, practical training and legal expertise.
Highlighting the role of seafarers in global trade, the Prime Minister noted that they often lack adequate support during crises, and proposed the establishment of a Seafarers Emergency Support Network.
Concluding his remarks, he said that since the future is shared, the right to shape it must also be shared — moving from voice to impact and from privilege to partnership.
The session ended with the adoption of the New Delhi BRICS Leaders' Declaration, which sets out shared priorities, commitments and the direction for BRICS cooperation going forward.
