Modi, El-Sisi Hold Bilateral Talks as BRICS Summit Opens in Delhi
PM Narendra Modi met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Delhi during the 18th BRICS Summit, where leaders discussed cooperation and Global South priorities.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in New Delhi on Sunday, on the margins of the 18th BRICS Summit being held under India's chairship.
The two leaders met at Bharat Mandapam, the summit venue, as Egypt participates in the grouping it joined as a full member in January 2024 alongside Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
India and Egypt share longstanding diplomatic ties, with ambassadorial-level relations established on August 18, 1947. The relationship has seen continued engagement through the year, including a visit by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty in May 2026 for the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting, during which he held bilateral talks on the sidelines. Justice Minister Mahmoud El-Sherif also attended the BRICS Justice Ministers' Meeting and met Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal on its margins.
El-Sisi, who is attending the two-day BRICS session, also met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines on Saturday. According to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Putin expressed satisfaction with the steady progress in bilateral relations, noting consistent growth and structural improvements in trade. He described Egypt as a long-standing and reliable friend and invited El-Sisi to Moscow in October for the upcoming Russia-Africa Summit.
On Sunday, BRICS leaders held a session titled 'Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth.' Addressing the gathering, Modi said the trust of Global South nations in BRICS has grown, and highlighted initiatives by the 11-nation group in disaster management, MSME cooperation and the environment.
The Prime Minister said India has advanced the spirit of friendship, partnership and cooperation through the BRICS platform, and that efforts have been made to ensure cooperation extends beyond governments to include entrepreneurs, farmers, researchers, women, youth and ordinary citizens.
"I can say from personal experience that the trust of Global South nations in BRICS has grown, because their voices are heard, their experiences are respected, and solutions are crafted not just for them, but with them," he said, adding that the strength of BRICS lies in its diversity and cooperation.
Modi is also scheduled to meet the leaders of South Africa, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, Burundi, Uganda and Nigeria during the summit.
