Modi-Putin Meeting Set for Friday Ahead of BRICS Summit in New Delhi

The Kremlin has confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold bilateral talks on Friday, one day before the BRICS leaders' summit scheduled in New Delhi on September 12-13. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov made the announcement during an online interaction with Indian journalists.

Peskov described the relationship between the two leaders as close and pragmatic, noting they are able to discuss sensitive global and bilateral issues openly. He highlighted that 90 per cent of Russia's payments with BRICS member countries are now conducted through national currencies, reflecting a broader shift away from the US dollar.

On trade, Peskov said Indian companies remain interested in the Russian market and in expanding investments in the Russian economy. He acknowledged that some issues cannot be discussed publicly due to pressure from "unfriendly countries" attempting to obstruct cooperation, a reference to Western sanctions.

Regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Peskov reiterated that Russia seeks a peaceful resolution and welcomes contributions from India and the United States. He noted that American negotiators are actively shuttling between Moscow and Kyiv, and expressed hope for a restart of trilateral negotiations.

Addressing the recent tensions between the UAE and Iran, Peskov admitted the situation complicates drafting the BRICS declaration. He expressed confidence that diplomats, including those from India's presidency, would find acceptable wording to satisfy all parties.

On defence ties, Peskov confirmed that Russia remains committed to fulfilling its obligations, including the delayed delivery of the S-400 air defence system. He also said discussions are underway regarding the sale and potential technology transfer of the Sukhoi-57 fighter aircraft, though he stressed that military cooperation is conducted discreetly.

Peskov addressed the issue of Indian citizens in the Russian armed forces, stating that a list is being prepared and those identified will be sent home. He also noted that Russian energy supplies to India have set new monthly records, though he declined to provide specific figures.

Commenting on the global order, Peskov said the unipolar system is collapsing and losing competitiveness. He framed BRICS as a flexible club based on mutual trust and respect, contributing to a multipolar world where national currencies are increasingly preferred over the dollar.
