PM Modi Tells Putin: Move From Endless War to End of War

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on Russia to end the war in Ukraine, urging a shift from a situation of "endless war" to an "end of war." The appeal came during a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

"We have to move from a situation of 'endless war' to 'end of war'... It is humanity's wish that the end of this war happens soonest," PM Modi said during a joint statement with President Putin.

Reaffirming India's consistent position, the Prime Minister stated that New Delhi supports all peaceful efforts to resolve the conflict and will continue to do so. He stressed that India advocates for resolving all problems peacefully, a necessity for all of humanity.

The remarks echo PM Modi's earlier assertion that "this is not an era of war," a message he first delivered to President Putin in 2022. That statement had resonated globally at the time. India has since maintained that diplomacy and dialogue are the only viable paths to a permanent peace in the region.

PM Modi also invoked India's cultural heritage, describing the nation as the "land of Gandhi and the land of Buddha," whose shared message is the path of peace. He noted that every day of war sets humanity back and that efforts must be directed toward ending hostilities.

The bilateral meeting in Bishkek comes just a week before President Putin is expected to visit New Delhi for the BRICS summit.
