Modi, Putin Meet on BRICS Sidelines; Putin Invites PM to Russia for Annual Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the margins of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, their second meeting this year. The two leaders had last met in Bishkek on 31 August 2026, on the sidelines of the 26th SCO Summit.

During the talks, the leaders reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation across political, economic, defence, energy, space, skill mobility and people-to-people domains. They welcomed Russia's International Industrial Exhibition, INNOPROM India, held in India for the first time from 9 to 11 September 2026, and underlined its role in expanding trade and industrial ties. Both leaders visited the exhibition and interacted with participants.

The two sides also exchanged views on India-Russia engagement in the multilateral sphere, particularly within BRICS under India's Chairship for 2026. They shared perspectives on key regional and global issues, including the conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region, which have affected maritime trade and the safety and security of Indian seafarers.

Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy remain the way forward in resolving conflicts, and said India stands ready to assist in peace efforts. The leaders agreed to stay engaged in strengthening the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership, which they noted continues to register significant growth and has shown resilience amid geopolitical uncertainties.

Putin invited the Prime Minister to visit Russia for the 24th India-Russia Annual Summit, and Modi accepted. The dates will be finalised through diplomatic channels as per mutual convenience.
