PM Pitches Swadeshi Push as India Logs 7.8% GDP Growth
PM Modi hailed 7.8% GDP growth and renewed his Swadeshi appeal, urging citizens to avoid foreign travel and gold purchases.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated the nation on the economy expanding at a faster-than-expected 7.8% in the April-June quarter, describing the performance as a reflection of the country's collective strength and resolve.
In a video message posted on Instagram from Kyrgyzstan, Modi noted that the growth came despite a challenging global environment marked by conflicts, disrupted supply chains, and lingering instability since the Covid-19 pandemic. He said India's steady progress in such times was a herculean feat.
Reiterating his earlier appeal, the Prime Minister urged citizens to embrace the spirit of Swadeshi. He advised against foreign tourism and destination weddings abroad, asking people to follow the mantra of 'Wed in India'. He also suggested avoiding unnecessary gold purchases to help the country manage external shocks.
Modi emphasised that greater reliance on local products and services would accelerate India's progress. Expressing confidence in the nation's trajectory, he said the goal is to hand over a developed India to the youth by the centenary of independence.
The Prime Minister also called for hard work towards a Viksit Bharat, asserting that the right policies, clear intentions, and the united strength of 140 crore citizens are taking the country to new heights.
This appeal echoes his remarks from May, when he had similarly encouraged measures like reducing fuel consumption, using public transport, and prioritising Made in India products to cushion the economy against global headwinds.
