Modi, Xi Hold Bilateral Talks on Sidelines of BRICS Summit in New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping in New Delhi on 12 September 2026, on the margins of the BRICS Summit. The two leaders reviewed the trajectory of India-China relations since their previous meeting in Tianjin in August 2025 and noted the steady progress made since then.

Both sides reaffirmed the need to view the relationship from a strategic and long-term perspective, with the understanding that differences should not be allowed to become disputes. The Prime Minister stressed that the ties should be guided by the three mutuals — mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest.

On the border question, Modi underlined that peace and tranquility in the border areas remain an essential basis for the continued development of bilateral relations. He called for strict observance of existing agreements and understandings on border-related issues. The two leaders expressed their commitment to a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question, proceeding from the political perspective of overall bilateral relations and the long-term interests of both peoples.

The leaders also took note of progress in people-to-people contacts and emphasised the need to promote cultural exchanges, business linkages and greater mobility between the two countries. On economic and trade ties, they highlighted the importance of addressing each other's concerns, including the structural trade imbalance and supply chain issues, along with facilitating meaningful and predictable market access.

Both leaders agreed that the two sides must continue to expand common ground on regional and global issues and work together in addressing shared challenges. The Prime Minister appreciated China's support for India's BRICS chairship and its contribution to the success of the BRICS Summit 2026.
