Modi, Xi Press for Stable Ties at BRICS Sidelines in Delhi
PM Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi, with both leaders calling for stable India-China ties.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi on Saturday, with both leaders stressing the need for stable relations between their countries.
During the talks, Modi said peace and tranquility along the India-China border is an essential basis for the continued development of bilateral ties. He also said the relationship should be guided by what he described as three mutuals: mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest.
Xi said China has approached its relations with India from a strategic and long-term perspective. He called on the two countries to draw on each other's strengths, support one another and pursue common development.
The Chinese president also urged high-quality cooperation between the two nations. He said that as major members of the Global South, India and China should work towards a more multipolar world and contribute to global peace and stability.
Modi thanked Xi for China's cooperation in hosting the summit. China will host the BRICS summit next year.
The two leaders had last held talks in China last year, when Modi visited to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a regional political, economic and security grouping founded by China.
