Romanian, Ukrainian Presidents Join Moldova’s Independence Day in Chisinau

Chisinau, Moldova – The presidents of Romania and Ukraine joined Moldova’s President Maia Sandu in Chisinau on Thursday as the country celebrated 35 years since its 1991 declaration of independence from the Soviet Union.

During a trilateral press conference, Sandu said Moldova would not be cowed by Russian drones that have repeatedly entered its airspace. She noted that even on the holiday, Russian drones had crossed into Moldovan territory in an attempt to intimidate the nation.

“We will not be intimidated,” Sandu said. She announced that Moldova is investing in anti-aircraft defense to protect its people and infrastructure, and called on all free-world countries to help Ukraine strengthen its own air defenses before winter.

Sandu emphasized the importance of regional cooperation, describing Moldova’s goal to be a good neighbor and a reliable friend to Ukraine, Romania, and the European Union, which Moldova is preparing to join. She highlighted the ease of movement and secure borders among the three countries.

Romanian President Nicusor Dan echoed the sentiment, expressing satisfaction with trilateral collaboration. He said the meeting demonstrated the leaders’ maturity in understanding their responsibility for regional security and stability, and mentioned discussions on infrastructure and common energy interconnection projects.

The celebrations in central Chisinau included a military parade, with President Sandu inspecting troops. Moldova’s Defense Ministry reported that five drones breached its airspace overnight, though it did not specify who launched them. The incident underscores regional anxieties over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the potential for wider conflict.
