Montenegro Wildfire Forces Evacuations as Blaze Engulfs Hills Above Bijela

A major wildfire is burning through hillsides above residential neighborhoods in Bijela, Montenegro, forcing precautionary evacuations and a large-scale firefighting response. Hundreds of firefighters have been deployed to contain the blaze, which has been spreading rapidly through dry vegetation.

Local officials have confirmed that several residents were evacuated as a safety measure. The fire has been raging overnight and into Thursday, with thick smoke plumes visible from nearby areas, including Herceg Novi.

Montenegro's coastal region is particularly vulnerable to forest fires during periods of intense summer heat. Strong, dry winds are exacerbating the situation, allowing the fire to spread quickly and increasing the risk to homes and property.

Authorities have requested assistance from fire brigades in neighboring countries to bolster the ongoing firefighting efforts. Emergency vehicles and firetrucks have been seen arriving at the scene as crews work to protect residential blocks.

The wildfire is part of a broader pattern of extreme weather affecting Europe. A prolonged heat wave has pushed temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in many countries, setting national records and straining energy systems. The combination of rising temperatures and drought has left vegetation drier and more combustible, leading to faster-spreading and more intense fires across the continent.

Scientists and officials warn that such extreme events are becoming more frequent and severe as the climate warms. Europe is heating at more than twice the global average since the 1980s, according to the European Union's Copernicus climate service, making the continent particularly susceptible to these fire-prone conditions.
