Morena MP Zenyazen Escobar Found Dead in Veracruz

Mexican federal lawmaker Zenyazen Escobar of the ruling Morena party was found dead in a car in Veracruz state.

A federal lawmaker from Mexico's ruling Morena party was found dead on Friday inside a vehicle on a highway in the eastern state of Veracruz, according to officials.

The body of Congressman Zenyazen Escobar García was discovered in the community of La Gloria, in the municipality of Puente Nacional, near the state capital Xalapa. Veracruz Government Secretary Ricardo Ahued Bardahuil confirmed the discovery, stating that the State Attorney General's Office is investigating.

State police located Escobar inside a black vehicle parked on the shoulder of Federal Highway 140. A firearm was found inside the vehicle, Ahued said. He indicated that initial assessments suggest the death was not the result of an attack on the vehicle, describing it as a "regrettable death by firearm," while cautioning against speculation as the investigation is in its early stages.

The Veracruz prosecutor, Lisbeth Aurelia Jiménez Aguirre, confirmed the discovery but declined to say whether Escobar was the victim of a homicide. The federal Attorney General's Office is expected to take over the investigation.

Escobar, a native of Veracruz, previously served as the state's education secretary under former Governor Cuitláhuac García Jiménez. He was elected to the federal Congress in 2024.

The incident follows the recent killings of other Mexican politicians, including the mayor of Temoac in Morelos state and the mayor of Uruapan in Michoacán.
