Tirupati Marks M.S. Subbulakshmi's 110th Birth Anniversary with Musical Tributes
Music enthusiasts, classical vocalists and cultural organisations paid tribute to M.S. Subbulakshmi in Tirupati on her 110th birth anniversary.
Tirupati observed the 110th birth anniversary of the legendary Carnatic vocalist and Bharat Ratna awardee M.S. Subbulakshmi on Wednesday, with a cross-section of the music community gathering to honour her memory.
Devotees of classical music, emerging vocalists, stage artists and academics from the field assembled at the singer's bronze idol at the APSRTC junction, where they offered floral tributes.
Scholars present sang compositions from her repertoire as a mark of respect for the artiste affectionately called 'MS Amma' in music circles. Students from the Nadaswaram department also presented 'Mangala Vadyam' as part of the homage.
Speakers at the gathering highlighted her enduring association with the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, recalling that royalty from the Sri Venkateswara Suprabhatham and the Annamayya Kirtans contributed crores of rupees to the temple body.
Members of Rayalaseema Rangasthali, a Tirupati-based cultural organisation, paid their respects at the statue under the leadership of its president, Gundala Gopinath Reddy. He spoke of how the singer carried devotion to listeners through works such as Bhaja Govindam and Vishnu Sahasranamam.
The observances reflected the continued resonance of Subbulakshmi's voice in the devotional and classical traditions she helped popularise.
