MSDE Secretary Opens EV & Green Skills Lab at NSTI Bengaluru
Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary, MSDE, inaugurated a Skills4Future EV & Green Skills Lab at NSTI Bengaluru to boost industry-aligned green skilling.
A new Electric Vehicle and Green Skills Lab was inaugurated at the National Skill Training Institute (NSTI) in Bengaluru by Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE). The facility has been set up under the Skills4Future programme, a collaboration involving Shell India, the Directorate General of Training (DGT) under MSDE, and the Edunet Foundation.
The lab is intended to give trainees practical exposure to electric vehicle systems, battery technologies, diagnostics and safety practices, along with other emerging green technologies. According to the programme's partners, the aim is to improve the employability of students and faculty in the fast-growing areas of sustainable mobility and clean energy.
During her visit, the Secretary interacted with students, trainers and industry representatives, and reviewed the training infrastructure and practical learning modules on EV technology. She highlighted the role of industry-government collaboration in building a workforce prepared for future jobs, noting that such initiatives help young people access opportunities in green mobility, renewable energy and sustainable technologies, while supporting the country's broader goals of inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
The Skills4Future programme has so far reached more than 290 institutes across five states, trained over 70,000 learners, upskilled more than 258 faculty members and established 20 Green Skills EV labs. In Karnataka, it has covered 101 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and trained 9,113 students.
The initiative is positioned as part of the government's efforts to build a skilled workforce for India's transition towards green mobility and sustainable development. By combining industry-relevant curriculum, practical learning infrastructure and placement-linked opportunities, the programme seeks to address skill gaps and prepare youth for emerging sectors of the economy.
The inauguration at NSTI Bengaluru adds to the ongoing partnership between MSDE, DGT and Shell India, which the partners describe as a shared effort to equip young people with future-focused skills.
