Iron Barricade From Mumbai Metro Site Falls on Biker, 54, Killing Him

A 54-year-old man was killed in Mumbai on Friday when a heavy iron barricade from an ongoing metro construction site fell on his motorcycle, officials said.

The victim was identified as Wasim Haidar Rizvi, a plumber who lived in Khadi Gaon, Ashok Nagar, in Ghatkopar West. He was riding a Honda Unicorn when the roughly 6x8-foot iron barricade came down on him.

The accident occurred on LBS Road near the Rossary Biotech building. Rizvi was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The Parksite Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances that led to the barricade's collapse.

Friday's death adds to a series of accidents linked to Mumbai's metro construction sites. On February 14, one person was killed and three others were injured when a concrete parapet segment fell onto vehicles at the construction site of Metro Line 4.

In April, a wooden plank reportedly fell onto a car near the same Mulund metro construction stretch. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, however, said the material had fallen from the viaduct and that the incident was not corroborated at the site.

The latest incident is expected to renew questions about safety measures at metro construction sites across the city.
