Mumbai Police Detain Two With Gun, Fake PMO ID Ahead of PM Modi Event
Two men detained in Mumbai with a gun and fake PMO ID before PM Modi's fintech event. Police say no link to PM's visit.
Mumbai Police detained two men on Monday night in a security scare at the venue where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to speak on Tuesday. The incident occurred during a security drill at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in the Bandra Kurla Complex.
According to police, a 24-year-old man, identified as Rohan Parekh, was found moving suspiciously and claimed to be an official from the Prime Minister's Office. A check revealed he was carrying a fake PMO identity card. His companion, described as his bodyguard, was found in possession of a gun.
Police said the weapon was licensed. An FIR has been registered in connection with the incident, which involved three men allegedly using a suspicious government ID to force their way, armed, past mall security into Jio World Plaza. Two persons have been arrested.
The detentions triggered a security alert ahead of the Prime Minister's arrival. However, police have underscored that the incident has no connection with PM Modi's visit. The Mumbai Crime Branch has taken over the investigation given the seriousness of the matter.
PM Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) at the NMACC on Tuesday evening. The four-day conference, themed "Potential to Impact: Agentic AI, Tokenisation, Quantum - Trusted, Connected, Global Systems for Inclusive Finance," is one of the world's largest annual fintech gatherings.
