Senior Indian Union Muslim League leader Sayyid Munawwarali Shihab Thangal has sought to defuse the controversy surrounding a recent circular issued by the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama faction led by Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar.
The circular, addressed to mahals (local mosque committees) and madrasas, had directed them to ensure that women are not present at public religious celebrations. The directive triggered a debate within the community and drew criticism from various quarters.
Thangal, however, played down the issue, suggesting that the controversy was unnecessary. His remarks come amid growing concerns that such internal disagreements could distract from the community's broader interests.
The Kanthapuram faction's advisory has been seen by some as an attempt to enforce a stricter interpretation of religious norms regarding women's participation in public gatherings. Others have questioned the timing and scope of the directive, noting that it could affect the conduct of religious festivals and community events.
