Creative Economy a New Growth Frontier, Says Minister Murugan at Jindal Conclave
Dr. L. Murugan addressed the Jindal Policy Conclave, highlighting the creative economy's growth and the AVGC sector's projected demand for skilled professionals by 2030.
Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. L. Murugan, delivered the inaugural address at the opening ceremony of the Jindal Policy Conclave at O.P. Jindal Global University. The conclave was held on the theme "Law, Policy, and the Creative Economy".
Speaking to young participants, Dr. Murugan described the creative economy as a fast-growing space powered by ideas, imagination, culture, innovation and intellectual property. He pointed to film, music, gaming, animation, design, publishing, advertising and digital content as sectors generating fresh avenues for jobs and entrepreneurship.
He placed the creative economy at 3.1 per cent of global GDP and 6.2 per cent of global employment. In India, an estimated 57 million people are already engaged in cultural and creative occupations, while the country's media and entertainment economy is valued at ₹2.5 trillion.
On employment prospects for young Indians, Dr. Murugan said the animation, visual effects, gaming and comics (AVGC) sector is expected to require nearly two million skilled professionals by 2030. To meet this demand, the government has announced support for the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies and for AVGC Creator Labs in 15,000 schools and 500 colleges.
He also stressed that the sector's expansion needs backing from suitable legal and policy frameworks. These, he said, should cover copyright protection, fair compensation for creators and the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
Dr. Murugan urged young people to question assumptions and institutions with respect, reason and evidence, and to contribute their ideas and skills towards building a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
