Musk says brain-computer interfaces needed to close human-AI speed gap

Tesla and SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk has said humans must sharply increase the speed at which they communicate with artificial intelligence, warning that without brain-chip technology, advanced AI systems could eventually regard conversation with people as slow as talking to a tree.

Speaking in Silicon Valley, Musk identified biological enhancement as a critical area of focus and pointed to brain-computer interfaces such as Neuralink, the company he co-founded, as central to closing the gap between human and machine communication speeds.

Musk framed the problem as one of bandwidth. He said the peak rate at which humans can output information is roughly 100 bits per second, while input through vision is far higher — possibly a megabit per second or a few megabits per second, since the eyes function like cameras. Computers, by contrast, communicate at rates he described as reaching a trillion bits per second.

He argued that even in the most benign scenario, where an AI is friendly and seeks to make humans happy, the slow pace of human communication remains a constraint. Increasing the speed at which people can communicate, he said, would improve the alignment between humans and machines.

Without such advances, Musk warned, an AI operating at a terabyte per second would find talking to a human akin to talking to a tree, which takes a long time to respond.

The remarks place the long-running debate over human-machine communication bandwidth alongside broader questions about how humans and increasingly capable AI systems will interact.
