A gunfight between two armed Naga groups in a remote forested area of Manipur's Noney district has resulted in one death and five injuries. The clash occurred in the Khumji area, which remains inaccessible to security forces due to difficult terrain.
The exchange of fire took place between the JUF-Jenchui and JUF-Kamson factions of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF). These groups have been involved in a longstanding rivalry over influence and control in Zeliangrong-inhabited regions of western Manipur.
Security agencies have not yet reached the location, and officials have not issued an official account of the incident. Sources indicate the situation remains fluid, and the casualty count could change once personnel arrive at the site and assess the ground situation.
The confrontation is part of a broader pattern of factional tensions within the ZUF, which was formed in 2011 after a split involving former NSCN-IM cadres. The group has since advocated for the protection of Zeliangrong community interests and has periodically been involved in armed confrontations in areas such as Khoupum Valley and parts of Noney and neighbouring districts.
