Nagercoil railway station to get nine new lines, two platforms in major upgrade

Nagercoil railway station in Tamil Nadu is set for a significant infrastructure expansion, with nine new stabling lines and two additional platforms planned to enhance its train-handling capacity. The project, overseen by Southern Railway's Thiruvananthapuram Division, aims to support the growing rail network in the region.

A senior railway official confirmed that the yard expansion will include the construction of Platforms 4 and 5. These additions are expected to streamline operations and accommodate increased traffic at the station.

In parallel with the yard work, the station is undergoing passenger-focused redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). Launched in 2022, ABSS focuses on long-term station development, including improved accessibility, multimodal connectivity, and better overall passenger experience.

The upgrade includes refurbishment of the concourse, circulating area, parking, booking office, and waiting hall. Toilet facilities are also being modernised. At the platform level, Platform 1 will receive upgraded flooring and extended cover, while a new six-metre-wide foot over bridge will ease passenger movement.

Additional amenities include enhanced Divyangjan facilities, water coolers, charging points, digital coach indication boards, and a modernised announcement system. Lighting around the approach road and parking areas will be improved, and semi-elliptical signages will aid wayfinding. Two entrance arches and a refreshed station façade are also part of the plan.

Last year, Indian Railways completed the doubling of the Nagercoil Town–Nagercoil Junction–Kanniyakumari line, a segment of the larger Thiruvananthapuram–Kanniyakumari doubling project, which has increased line capacity in the corridor.
