A 32-year-old woman was arrested after her speeding SUV injured seven people, including three children, in Nagpur's Gorewada area. Police suspect drunk driving and are awaiting medical reports.
A 32-year-old woman was arrested after the SUV she was driving ploughed into pedestrians in Nagpur on Tuesday night, injuring seven people, three of them children, police said.
The incident occurred near the Dinshaw factory in the city's Gorewada area. According to police, the woman's speeding Kia Seltos first collided with another SUV and hit its driver, Balu Kulmethe, who was stepping out of his vehicle with his young daughter at the time.
The car, which police said was already out of control owing to speeding and negligence, then struck three children walking along the road. It went on to hit two more people, identified as Harish Rambhau Revatkar and Ashish Nakhate.
All the injured were taken to a nearby hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
As word of the crash spread, a large crowd gathered at the spot. An angry mob surrounded the police station and demanded strict action against the accused driver. Police said they pacified the crowd and brought the situation under control before placing the woman under arrest.
Investigators suspect the woman was driving under the influence of alcohol, though this will be confirmed only after her medical examination. Deputy Commissioner of Police Annapurna Singh said the woman was in custody and had been medically examined. "We are waiting for the reports. Further action will be taken based on the reports," she said.
Officials are also scanning CCTV footage from the scene and from surrounding areas as part of the investigation.
