Nagpur Woman Dies by Suicide on Video Call After Partner Refuses Marriage
A Nagpur woman died by suicide during a video call with her partner, who had refused to marry her. Police have filed an abetment case against the man.
A young woman in Nagpur died by suicide while on a video call with her partner, who had refused to marry her despite a long relationship, police said. Her family has alleged that the man sexually exploited her under the promise of marriage.
The woman, who worked at a private company in Nagpur, lived with a friend in the Dhantoli area. The accused, a 34-year-old originally from Amravati, is pursuing a PhD in Pune.
According to the police, the two had been in a relationship for several years. Some months ago, the man visited the woman's mother along with a friend and expressed his wish to marry her. She gave her consent, but his family opposed the match. He kept their opposition from the woman and continued to meet her in Nagpur.
When the woman raised the subject of marriage, he avoided giving a clear answer, police said. He later told her he could not marry her. Her family has alleged that he also threatened to circulate objectionable photographs of her on social media if she kept pressing him on the issue.
The refusal and the alleged threats left the woman under severe mental stress, according to the complaint.
On the night of September 19, she video-called the man and told him she intended to end her life. In her mother's complaint, he is accused of making no attempt to stop her. The woman hanged herself while the call was still connected.
Investigators found that the call remained active for about 23 minutes after her death.
A case of abetment to suicide has been registered at the Dhantoli police station. The accused is being questioned, officials said.
