Doctors at Narayana Health have announced two independent medical milestones that highlight progress in treating blood disorders and hard-to-tackle cancers.
In the first case, a seven-year-old patient with thalassaemia — a genetic condition that impairs haemoglobin production — has become transfusion-free following a Haplo-cord transplant. This procedure combines a half-matched (haploidentical) donor stem cell graft with umbilical cord blood, an approach designed to improve engraftment and reduce complications in patients who lack a fully matched donor.
The second breakthrough involves a 62-year-old patient with brain cancer who responded to dual-target CAR-T cell therapy. Unlike conventional single-target CAR-T treatments, this therapy is engineered to recognise two antigens on tumour cells simultaneously, potentially improving its precision and effectiveness against cancers that are difficult to treat.
Both outcomes were reported by the hospital as evidence of advancing capabilities in cellular therapy and transplant medicine. While the announcements are significant, the details of the patients' long-term follow-up and broader clinical implications have not been disclosed.
