NASA's Roman Telescope Blasts Off on Mission to Map the Cosmos
NASA launched its Roman Space Telescope to search for exoplanets and study dark energy from a distant orbit.
NASA's newest space observatory, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, lifted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Sunday, marking the start of an ambitious mission to survey the universe. The launch, carried out by SpaceX using a Falcon Heavy rocket, took place shortly after daybreak.
The telescope, named after NASA's first chief astronomer, is now headed toward a stable observation point about 1.6 million kilometers from Earth — the same region of space occupied by the James Webb Space Telescope. The journey is expected to take more than three months.
Once operational, Roman will focus on two major scientific goals: hunting for planets beyond our solar system and investigating the mysterious force known as dark energy. Its wide-field instrument will capture images of the cosmos at a scale far exceeding previous observatories. The telescope's field of view is over 100 times wider than that of the Hubble Space Telescope, which continues to operate after more than three decades in orbit.
While Roman provides a broad survey capability, Webb offers a complementary, more focused view, capable of studying objects dating back to the early universe. Together with the European Space Agency's Euclid spacecraft and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile, these instruments are expected to work in tandem to address some of the most profound questions in modern astronomy.
