Tamil Nadu to Sell Nashik Onions at ₹35/kg via Ration Shops
Tamil Nadu begins selling subsidised onions from Nashik through fair price shops to cool retail prices.
The Tamil Nadu government has begun distributing onions procured from Nashik through fair price shops across the state, in a bid to ease open-market prices. The first consignment of 850 tonnes arrived by goods train at the Korukkupet Railway Goods Shed on Monday.
The procurement was carried out using the state's price stabilisation fund, following directions from the Chief Secretary at a review meeting. The A-grade onions were sourced through the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), acting on instructions from the central government.
According to officials, the onions will be sent to 21 districts. Chennai and Tiruchi are each slated to receive 75 tonnes, while Coimbatore will get 100 tonnes. NAFED sources indicated that another rail consignment is expected shortly, with additional supplies also being moved by road.
The Registrar of Cooperative Societies has directed the Tamil Nadu Consumers' Cooperative Federation to ensure timely delivery of onions to fair price shops. The onions are expected to be sold at ₹35 per kilogram.
Separately, the state government is also monitoring sugar prices, sources said.
